*grrrrrr* Maybe it's just 4 o'clock in the morning or something, but nothing pisses me off more than having an LJ comm post a link to a meta conversation that only allows comments from people with dreamwidth accounts. Fuckin asshats. If you only allow participation from dreamwidth account holders, then don't post your fuckin links on LJ comms. What the fuck eva. Maybe I'll go to bed and see if that makes it all go away and seem like nothing when I wake. Stranger things have happened ... Okay, back to your regularly scheduled LJing. Or, you know, DWing ... but if you're on DW, you can't fuckin comment HERE. *grumpity grump grump grump* On the less piss-ant side of my coin this morning, just finished a fic I'll be posting either tomorrow or Monday (depending on the last-swipe polish time required). Bobby, Castiel and John in-abstentia. Maybe THAT's the problem. I've been writing Grumpy Bobby and Jackass John all night long, so I'm just intolerant as all hell when someone does something that don't fit my particular way of thinking on how things ought be done. But seriously, man ... come ON! (I love that icon: it so represents me ... that parenthetical comment probably being funnier if you know the meta post I've got my panties in a twist over concerns the assumptions we may or may not make based on default icons.) Yet another amazing and insightful publication from one of the smartest (and coolest) people I know, the awesome eldritchhobbit . Absolutely everything she touches is a joy to read and ponder, and this one is no exception. In addition to her cred as an international expert/speaker on the subject of Native American intellectual history, she's also a fandom lifer, The 2006 Imperishable Flame Award for Accomplishment in Tolkien/Inklings Scholarship winner, and someone who can bend your ear in the most delighful ways on any subject from C.S.Lewis to Sean Bean (just don't ask her about Wayoun ... you'll NEVER get away!) ... all of which means, there is simply no one on the PLANET more qualified to speak to this particular subject with both authority and wit. The Intersection of Fantasy and Native America From H.P. Lovecraft to Leslie Marmon Silko
The Official Description: A number of contemporary Native American authors incorporate elements of fantasy into their fiction, while several non-Native fantasy authors utilize elements of Native America in their storytelling. Nevertheless, few experts on fantasy consider American Indian works, and few experts on Native American studies explore the fantastic in literature. Now an international, multi-ethnic, and cross-disciplinary group of scholars investigates the meaningful ways in which fantasy and Native America intersect, examining classics by American Indian authors such as Louise Erdrich, Gerald Vizenor, and Leslie Marmon Silko, as well as non-Native fantasists such as H.P. Lovecraft, J.R.R. Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling. Thus these essayists pioneer new ways of thinking about fantasy texts by Native and non-Native authors, and challenge other academics, writers, and readers to do the same. Read more about the project in her own words here, then run over to amazon.com and buy a copy. And be sure to keep your eye out for her next book in the new year: The Gothic Imaginations of J.R.R. Tolkien, Madeleine L’Engle, and J.K. Rowling. Tags: thinky-thinky Current Mood: pleased
